Depressed mother slashes throat of infant son in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY—A 28-year-old mother has been detained in Barotac Nuevo for allegedly slashing the throat of her seven-month-old infant and drinking his blood inside their house in Barotac Viejo.

The woman, who was believed to be suffering from depression, was detained at the police station in Barotac Nuevo town, about 38 km from here, pending the filing of appropriate charges for killing her son.

The husband requested that their names be withheld.

According to Insp. Joven Arevalo, Barotac Nuevo police chief, the suspect used a trowel in slashing the throat of the infant inside their house in Barangay California, in Barotac Viejo town on Friday afternoon.

“The husband said that he noticed his wife was acting strangely and was very uneasy. She borrowed a trowel from their relatives which she used to slash his son’s throat,” Arevalo said.

The husband began to suspect that something bad had happened. So he rushed home only to find their son on the sink with a slit on his throat.

Standing in front of the sink was his wife whose mouth and shirt full of the baby’s blood. /jpv
