The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Thursday said it is “saddened and disturbed” by the insinuations against Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David.
“Many, including myself, are saddened and disturbed by the recent statements made against Bp. Pablo Virgilio David, that he allegedly committed actions that question his integrity,” CBCP President Romulo Valles said in a statement.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier claimed in a speech last Tuesday that David was into drugs.
“David,” the President said at one point in his speech. “Nagdududa tuloy ako bakit sige ka ikot kapag gabi, duda tuloy ako sa droga ka.”

The CBCP said David is a good bishop, noting that he is passionate in helping the poor and suffering.
“Very many of us bishops have come to know Bp. David as a very good bishop, a dedicated shepherd and father of the flock in the Diocese of Kalookan,” Valles said. “He is very passionate in his ministry, bringing “mercy and compassion,” especially to the poor and suffering among his people.”
CBCP also asked the public to pray for David so that God may “grant him strength, calmness and peace” amid his difficult situation. /muf
