A baby who was abandoned in a dumpster in Guangdong province, China was found alive and well by a street cleaner recently. The street cleaner, who was working around the Baoan district, first thought the baby’s cries were of a kitten’s but upon closer inspection, realized it was a child.
The baby was found last Nov. 16, swaddled by a plastic bag inside the dumpster. It also had balls of tissue paper in its mouth to muffle its cries, as per Shenzhen Special Zone Daily via South China Morning Post on Nov. 21.
The cleaner said in the report that emergency services were immediately called upon discovering the baby. A doctor arrived and deemed the baby healthy and in good condition.
Footage from CCTV cameras led authorities to identify the baby’s mother as a 17-year-old local factory worker. The girl was unmarried and gave birth to the baby in her dormitory before abandoning it in the dumpster. Meanwhile, a security guard from the nearby factory said that the girl had only been working for less than a week in the establishment.
Thus far, it is unknown whether the baby will be returned to its mother or not, and its current caretaker has not been identified in the report. Cody Cepeda/JB
