Four workers involved in the construction of the controversial “stairway to heaven” footbridge in Quezon City, were arrested for allegedly using shabu on Tuesday.
Personnel of the Kamuning Police Station arrested the four workers after receiving reports that some of the workers constructing the footbridge are using illegal drugs. The suspects were arrested in their barracks near the NIA Road, a report from the Quezon City Police District said on Wednesday.
Police identified the suspects as Jan Jan Rasonable, 26, Joseph Baldia, 27, Lolito Lacang, 38, and Jonard Jagon, 23.
Recovered from them were four sachets of suspected shabu, P300 marked cash, and various paraphernalia to use shabu.
The suspects are now detained at the Kamuning police station and are facing charges for using illegal drugs.
Meanwhile, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has assured that there is “nothing to worry about” the safety of the footbridge even if some of the workers involved in its construction are allegedly into illegal drugs.
“[There is] nothing to worry in the safety of the bridge despite reports na adik ang mga gumagawa dahil may final inspection prior to acceptance lahat ng government projects,” Celine Pialago, spokesperson of the MMDA, told reporters in a text message.

Pialago said the target opening of the 10 million footbridge on November 27 will not be affected by the arrest of the workers.
