DepEd starts probe on ‘starfish-throwing’ incident involving teachers

The Department of Education (DepEd) said Thursday that it is investigating the incident involving teachers who were photographed “throwing” starfish into the sea.

“The Department of Education (DepEd), through the DepEd Region IV-B and the Schools Division Office of Palawan, is now looking into the incident involving teachers who were photographed “throwing” several starfish into the sea,” the DepEd Communications Office said in a statement.

The photos, posted in the Facebook page of Palawan Supernews, has gone viral, drawing flak from netizens  since it was posted on Monday.

DepEd noted that its regional office will issue a memorandum “reminding all teaching and non-teaching personnel of their critical role as exemplar to students in promoting the protection of and respect for all forms of wildlife.”

Earlier, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said that its Biodiversity Management Bureau has informed the field office in Palawan and the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development.
