DID YOU KNOW: Inauguration of Commonwealth of the Philippines

On Nov. 15, 1935, the Commonwealth of the Philippines was inaugurated.

Two months earlier, Filipinos elected their president and vice president, marking the first time that a Filipino sat as chief executive and held office in Malacañang.

The Commonwealth was the culmination of efforts to secure the withdrawal of American sovereignty over the Philippines. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
