Binay says speakership not his reason in seeking House seat

Former Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wednesday said that the House speakership is not his reason for seeking the post of Makati City’s First District Representative in the 2019 elections.

“Magkakandidato ako sa Congress para makapaglingkod ulit para sa buong bansa. Hindi ‘yung speakership ang dahilan para ako ay magkandidato,” he said in a forum.

(I will run for Congress to serve the entire country once again. Speakership is not the reason for me to run.)

According to Binay, the next House Speaker will most likely come from the coalition of the Duterte administration.

“‘Yung speakership, let’s leave it to realities. Ang speakership, una, ay kung sino ang magustuhan ng administrasyon (Let’s leave the speakership to realities. Speakership comes to whomever the administration wants),” he said.

“Expect that somebody from the administration or the selection of the next Speaker will come from the administration,” he said.

House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is on her last term as Pampanga Representative. She will end her term in 2019.

Binay will run as congressman under the ticket of Makati Mayor Abby Binay. He will vie for the post against his former Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña. /je
