Twin quakes hit Sultan Kudarat late Monday

Two earthquakes jolted Sultan Kudarat within minutes of each other late Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The first and stronger earthquake measured magnitude 4.9 and hit 49 kilometers (km) southwest of the town of Kalamansig at 10:49 p.m., Phivolcs said Tuesday.

It was felt at Intensity III in Kalamansig and adjacent town Lebak and was recorded at Instrumental Intensity I in Tupi, South Cotabato.

The quake of tectonic origin had a depth of 1 km.

Minutes later, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 hit the same general area at 10:54 a.m., Phivolcs said.

Intensity II was also felt in Kalamansig and Lebak in Sultan Kudarat.

Also of tectonic origin, it had a depth of 8 km.

Phivolcs said no aftershocks or damage could be expected from the earthquake. /cbb
