Makati subway to create jobs for 6,000 people

The construction and operation of Makati City’s ambitious intracity subway system are projected to generate 6,000 new jobs in the financial capital by the time of its completion in 2023.

In a statement on Monday, Mayor Abby Binay said she was committed to finishing the Public Rail Transport (PRT) in five years.

But who would oversee the start of its construction depends on who will win in 2019. She will be running against her brother, former Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr., who is seeking to regain his old post.

“The Makati subway project will create around 6,000 new jobs for Makatizens and numerous economic opportunities,” Abby said, including indirectly spurring job growth and productivity with a faster, more efficient transport system.

The PRT, a joint venture between the city government and a consortium of investors, will span 10 kilometers and allow 27,000 commuters to crisscross Makati in each direction every hour.

The government is hoping to break ground on the project before the end of the year.
