A 34-year-old drunk homeless man was arrested after he hit a man in the head with a broomstick, as the victim refused to give him alms, in New York, United States.
Jodache DuPont was incarcerated and charged with assault in the second degree, as reported by the New York Post on Friday, Nov. 9. His 52-year-old victim, whose head bled after the incident and whose identity was withheld, was rushed to the nearest hospital.
Apparently, the victim was buying an apple from a fruit stand on Friday when the drunk DuPont approached him. The suspect demanded the customer gave him a dollar.
Despite the victim telling DuPont to leave him alone, the suspect relentlessly asked for alms, the report said. The fruit stand worker, Kumar Chanda, immediately sought the help of authorities to send the persistent drunk beggar away.
Meanwhile, the suspect grabbed the fruit stand broom and whacked the victim in the head, breaking the broom in the process. Chanda returned with the police just in time to see the bloodied customer and DuPont holding the broken broom.
The police responded quickly, arresting the drunk beggar, the report stated. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
“It was one of those things where everything happened right on time,” a security guard, whose identity was also withheld, told the publication. “The guy was in handcuffs in the car by the time I got out there. The whole thing was less than five minutes.”
The guard recounted that before getting into the ambulance, the bloodied victim told the police, “I didn’t do anything.” Kate Matriano/JB
