The Department of Health (DOH) condemned on Friday the attack on the convoy of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director General Nela Charade Puno in Lupi town, Camarines Sur province last Thursday.

“We condemn in no uncertain terms ‘yung nangyari at tayo ay nakikiramay doon sa pamilya ng mga pumanaw na pulis,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III told Radyo Inquirer.

Duque said the convoy was heading to Daet town in Camarines Norte province when they were attacked by suspected communist rebels.

Duque assured that Puno was safe and was secured by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Camarines Sur after the incident.

However, three police escorts were killed and three others were wounded during the incident.

Duque added that it was possible that the gunmen were targeting the policemen and not Puno.

“Yan ay undergoing investigation at lumalabas na possible pero hindi pa sigurado na baka naman hindi siya ang pinuntirya, kundi baka yung mga kapulisan na nagconvoy sa kanya,” he said.
