Most Filipinos think fish in markets are smaller, more expensive — SWS

More than half of Filipinos perceived that fish and seafood in markets are smaller, more expensive, and have fewer varieties compared to a decade ago, a Social Weather Stations Survey (SWS) released on Wednesday revealed.

The survey, which was commissioned by Oceania Philippines, showed that 54 percent of Filipinos say that fish and seafood in the markets have shrunk and was fewer.

Meanwhile, 82 percent of Filipinos say that fish and seafood are more expensive compared to 10 years ago.

The polling body also noted that the catch of Filipino fishermen has declined continuously in the past four years, citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority from 2008 to 2017.

SWS reported that majority of Filipinos, or 71 percent, eat fish or seafood at least five days a month.

The survey, done by face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adult respondents nationwide and had a ± 3% error margin, was conducted from Sept. 23 to 27, 2017. /je
