Raising the bar of business competitiveness for Filipinos around the world will be one of the platforms for education of Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano if elected senator next year.
Cayetano said increasing the English literacy in the country “is not anti-Filipino.”
“It has nothing to do with heritage and love for the Filipino language. We must accept that the competitive language of the world is English,” Cayetano said in an interview before she filed her certificate of candidacy for senator at the Commission on Elections on Tuesday.
“So mag-improve tayo sa English natin. Ayaw kasi nating pag usapan yun kasi natatakot tayo because it’s anti-Filipino, it is not,” she added.
She also noted that learning the English language is a way of acknowledging that Filipinos are good English speakers, “Yet tayo, we don’t do anything about it.”
“It is acknowledging the reality na kaya daw tayo maraming [Business Process Outsourcing Company] dito kasi magaling daw tayong mga Pilipino, and yet nagde-deteriote iyon,”” she saud.
According to Cayetano, countries such as China, Singapore, Korea benefit from Filipinos’ English speaking teachers. /cbb
