CHR hits killing of former barangay captain in Cebu

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) condemned on Thursday the killing of a former barangay chairman in Cebu, saying the government should ensure the protection of the right to life.

Ferdinand Bas, former village chief of Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City, was killed in his house on Monday morning, earlier reports showed.

Bas was allegedly one of the narcopoliticians identified by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the commission said.

CHR stressed that due process and rule of law must be followed instead of violating the right to life.

“But, assuming this was true, due process and the rule of law should have been allowed to claim justice for possible crimes committed-not through any form of arbitrary deprivation of life,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The Commission then called on the government to “ensure protection of the right to life and all other human rights.” /cbb
