Makati goes extra mile for math

The Makati City government has allotted P12.5 million for a project aimed at raising the math proficiency of public school students by giving them free access to an online curriculum.

Mayor Abby Binay on Wednesday said 11 pilot schools would be covered by Project MILES (Mathematics Intensive Learning Enhancement for Students).

The budget will be used for the production of worksheets and  for high-speed internet connection in the following:  Bangkal Elementary School (Main), Comembo, Fort Bonifacio, Guadalupe Viejo, Nemesio Yabut, South Cembo, Hen. Pio del Pilar ES, Hen. Pio del Pilar I, Francisco Benitez III, Makati and Pitogo.

It will also cover honoraria for teachers who will handle the sessions and write worksheets, as well as for the project management staff.

According to schools division superintendent Rita Riddle, Project MILES has two programs: 180 MILES and 360 MILES. Students participating in either program must complete 10 four-hour sessions within the school year.

Students who have received failing grades in math will undergo the 180 MILES program, while those with consistently high grades will take  advanced lessons under the 360 program, Riddle added. —Dexter Cabalza
