Manila Water Company Inc. said on Monday that it will start implementing the first tranche of its approved rate hike on October 16 of this year.

Customers of the east zone concessionaire will pay an additional P1.46 per cubic meter starting October 16.

The Metropolitan Waterworks Sewerage System (MWSS) approved last Thursday the increase in the average basic rate of Manila Water Company and Maynilad Water Services Inc.

The approved rate adjustment for Manila Water is a total increase of P6.22 up to P6.50 which will be divided in the next four years, skipping 2019.

The second tranche will be implemented starting January 2020, the third will be in January 2021, and the last tranche will be implemented in January 2022.

“To mitigate the impact of the tariff increase on its customers, Manila Water shall stagger its implementation over a five-year period,” the company said.

The MWSS said that rate increase will be skipped in 2019 to help customers adjust. /je
