Typhoon “Kong-Rey” is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In its 4 a.m. advisory, Pagasa said the typhoon was last spotted at 1,565 km east of Southern Luzon outside PAR packing maximum winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness up to 160 kph.
“Itong si Kong-Rey ay inaasahang makakapasok na ng Philippine area of responsibility ngayong hapon. Ang kanyang sinusunod na track ay kagaya noong kay Typhoon Paeng o Trami at hindi natin nakikitang ito ay tatama sa alinmang bahagi ng kalupaan ng ating bansa,” weather specialist Ariel Rojas said.
The typhoon is moving west-northwest at a speed of 15 kph.
It will be named “Queenie” once it enters the PAR and it will be the 17th tropical cyclone to enter PAR this year.
The Bicol and Eastern Visayan Regions will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers because of the trough of the typhoon, Pagasa said.
However, the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers caused by localized thunderstorms.
Pagasa said two to three tropical cyclones could enter the PAR this October. /cbb
