An 30-year-old man pretended to be a doctor and raped a 17-year-old girl who recently gave birth, in a hospital’s maternity ward in Mthatha, South Africa.
The unnamed quack visited the teenager (identity withheld in the report), who gave birth on Monday, Sept. 24, for a supposed post-natal check up on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 25, as per News24.com on the same day. He then proceeded to rape the new mother. The police were contacted not long after the incident.
“It is further alleged that [he] ordered her to undress so as to do [a] thorough checkup and afterwards raped her in the maternity ward,” captain Dineo Koena stated in the report, saying the suspect was apprehended by the authorities at the hospital’s premises at around 12:30 p.m.
The incident apparently took place at a private hospital, the online publication noted in a separate report.
“Life St Mary’s Private Hospital has been made aware of the alleged incident that took place yesterday and is investigating the matter internally along with cooperating fully with the authorities,” regional manager Bruce Janssens of Life Healthcare, the operator of the said private hospital was quoted as saying.
The suspect failed to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Sept. 26. Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the alleged rapist will be making an appearance today, Sept. 27. Kate Matriano/JB
