10,000 homes to get ‘A liter of Lite’

MANILA, Philippines – A green lighting project to illuminate 10,000 homes in 32 rotary communities in Metro Manila Wednesday is hoping to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest green lighting program in the world.

Dubbed as “A Liter of Lite,” the lighting of these communities with solar bottle bulbs is particularly symbolic because it coincides with Bonifacio Day (November 30), Cha-Cha Camacho of Rotary Club of Makati San Lorenzo, the lead organization of the project.

“Rotarian Revolution” represents the changes that Rotary has made happen and will make happen in partnership with other organizations such as One Meralco foundation, My Shelter Foundation, local government units and Armed Forces of the Philippines,” she said.

“By lighting up these communities with Rotary’s pledge to help change the world for the better, Rotary is saying to the world that commitment to the development renewable energy source including solar power is imperative if we are not to condemn the planet to the catastrophic impacts of climate change. We hope that the people of Metro Manila will hear these words and join Rotary and its partners in the historic effort to light up 10,000 homes simultaneously,” said Shelly Lazaro, the project head of the Rotary Club of Makati San Lorenzo.

Rotary is a volunteer organization with 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. It initiates humanitarian projects that address today’s challenges affecting the world, such as hunger, poverty and environment degradation.

Meanwhile, public affairs chief Colonel Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr. said 17 teams convoyed from Camp Aguinaldo to designated locations to install the solar bulbs to 10,000 low-income households in Metro Manila.

The military is also expected to expand the reach of the project whose end-goal is to illuminate a million homes in 2012. The project started in San Pedro, Laguna with 5,000 lighted homes followed by another 5,000 more in the City of Manila, he added.
