The Carriedo Waterworks System was inaugurated on Aug. 23, 1878. Constructed by engineer and philanthropist Don Francisco Carriedo, it supplied water to 300,000 residents in Manila at 16 million liters per day. The system evolved and expanded to become the Manila Water Supply System in 1908 and later the Metropolitan Water District in 1919. Since 1972, it has been called the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System. —Marielle Medina
