Aug. 6, 1569
King Philip II of Spain issued a royal decree creating Cebu as the first Spanish province in the Philippines.
On the same day, King Philip II appointed Miguel Lopez de Legazpi as governor and captain general of Cebu “and all the other lands he would conquer.”
Legazpi later established Cebu (then a municipality) in Cebu province and named it “Villa del Santisimo Nombre de Jesus,” or Town of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.
Aug. 10, 1969
The town of San Jose in Nueva Ecija province formally became a city through Presidential Proclamation No. 595, days after Republic Act No. 6051 converting San Jose to a city was signed on July 17, 1969, by then President Ferdinand Marcos.
San Jose City’s primary source of livelihood is farming and the city’s major products are palay and onion.
Of the city’s 18,725 hectares of land, 11,219, or 60 percent, is used for agriculture.
