On July 25, 1872, revolutionary general Santiago Alvarez was born. Alvarez was sent to Manila to become a teacher but the outbreak of the revolution interrupted his studies. He fought for Filipinos and was called the Hero of the Battle of Dalahican. When peace was restored, Alvarez obtained a degree from Colegio de San Juan de Letran and then went on to take up law at Liceo de Manila. He became one of the founders of the Nacionalista Party and Philippine Independent Church.—Celine Dioticio, Inquirer Research
