More than 1,400 families evacuated in Marikina, Pasig

A total of 1,242 families or 5, 248 individuals were evacuated from their homes to schools and covered courts serving as temporary shelters as floodwaters rose in the city of Marikina.

According to a report from the Eastern Police District on Sunday, the affected Marikina residents are now staying in Malanday Elementary School (391 families), Bulelak Covered Court (232 families), Nangka Elementary School (44 families), Sta. Elena High School (36 families), Concepcion Integrated School (102 families, Tanong High School (32 families).

The H. Bautista Elementary School houses most of the evacuees, with 405 families using its facilities.

In Pasig City, 194 families have stayed in evacuation centers at Maybunga, Santolan, and Rosario, as certain areas of the city also experienced flooding.

Classes in Marikina on Monday were suspended as the local government declared a state of calamity.

“Marikina City is placed under the State of Calamity in order to provide timely response to disasters or emergencies occurring within its respective areas of responsibility,” Marikina Public Information Office said in a Facebook post.

“The declaration is done to guarantee emergency status and urgency of action necessary to save lives and properties,” they added. /ee
