CITY OF CALAPAN – Two police officers were killed in an ambush after they responded to a report of a vehicular accident in Taytay town in Palawan province on Sunday.

At around 8:30 a.m., the Taytay Municipal Police Station received a report about a vehicular accident involving a pedestrian and a motorcycle in Barangay Bato, according to Supt. Imelda Tolentino, information officer of the Mimaropa Police Regional Office.

PO3 Alexander Mimbalawag and PO1 Julpetri Gustaham responded to the call, boarding a patrol car with a team from the 401st Regional Mobile Force Company as convoy.

At about 10:35 a.m., after finishing their investigation of the accident, they got back on their patrol car, with Mimbalawag as driver.

They were traveling through Sitio Nagtakayan when they were ambushed by an undetermined number of unidentified armed men.

Mimbalawag and Gustaham were killed in the attack.

Police did not say if thegroup that attacked the police convoy were New People’s Army rebels or just a private armed group. /atm
