Village chair killed in Misamis Oriental

ILIGAN CITY – Another barangay chair was killed while he was feeding swine in his backyard in Purok 7, Barangay Danao, Jasaan town in Misamis Oriental, police said.

Alfredo Zapanta, 53, a newly elected chairman of the said barangay was at his backyard when two armed men, wearing bonnet and black jacket, arrived and shot him.

Zapanta was brought to Jasaan Hospital for treatment but declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Chief Inspector Rogelio Labor, chief of Jasaan Municipal Police Station, said the suspects escaped on a motorcycle waiting at a distance.

“He has no record of being involved in any illegal activities. He is not included in the drug watchlist,” Labor added.

Zapanta had finished three terms as barangay councilor. He was scheduled to have a meeting today with Misamis Oriental Governor Bambi Emano along with other barangay chairpersons of Jasaan.

Nicole Managbanag, Misamis Oriental provincial information officer, said Emano was saddened and condemned the killing. He said Zapanta was his supporter in the PaDayon Pilipino (PDP) Party.
