Malacañang Palace asked the Philippine National Police to conduct “a fair and thorough investigation” of the killing of Vice Mayor Alexander Lubigan of Trece Martires City in Cavite on Saturday.

“We strongly condemn the ambush,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement issued shortly after Lubigan was shot dead in an ambush by still unidentified assailants.

“Our condolences go out to the grieving family and friends of the late Vice Mayor Lubigan,” Roque added.

To end his statement, Roque said: “We must band together and put an end to the worrisome incidents of violence involving local politicians.‘

Lubigan was killed in the same week that two mayors – Antonio Halili of Tanauan City, Batangas, and Ferdinand Bote of General Tinio, Nueva Ecija – were assassinated. —Nestor Corrales
