Barber arrested for carrying bladed weapon dies in jail

A 41-year-old man arrested for carrying a gaff, a metal spur used in cockfighting, died on Monday shortly after he collapsed at the Parañaque City police station’s congested jail.

Senior Insp. Jerry Sunga, chief investigator of the Parañaque police, said the autopsy report showed that Gabriel Garay Jr., a barber, died of a heart attack.

Sunga told the Inquirer that the custodial facility currently holds 150 detainees who share a space meant for only 60 people.

Two weeks in detention

Garay, who was charged with possession of a deadly weapon, had been detained for at least two weeks.

A police report said Garay was rushed to Ospital ng Parañaque by three duty guards at 11:33 a.m. on Monday after he “suddenly collapsed and remained unconscious.” Doctors pronounced him dead at 3:10 p.m.

The police report added that Garay’s body did not bear signs of external injuries.
