TACLOBAN CITY – Local governments in Eastern Visayas observed the 120th Independence Day commemoration with the same message – preserve freedom.
Tacloban City Mayor Cristina Romualdez led in the commemoration, which was also to celebrate Tacloban’s 65th anniversary as a Charter City, at the city’s Plaza Rizal.
“Let’s work together for the good of the city to repay the sacrifices of our forebears,” Romualdez said.
Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla led a separate Independence Day program at the provincial capital grounds.
He said one way of preserving the country’s independence “is for all Filipinos to remain united,” adding that poverty could also be addressed by working together.
“We still have threats to our independence like independence from poverty,” he said.
