LUCENA CITY — Some local government units in the Calabarzon region have suspended in-person classes in schools and shifted to distance learning due to the extreme heat caused by the prevailing El Niño.
Below is the list from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in the region where in-person classes are suspended based on the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) emergency operations center report as of 5 a.m. Monday, May 6:
CAVITE
1. City of Bacoor – May 6–10: Kindergarten to Grade 12 (public)
2. Naic – May 6-31: all levels (public and private)
BATANGAS
1. City of Sto. Tomas – May 6-10: all levels (public and private)
LAGUNA
1. City of Cabuyao – May 6-10: elementary to high school (public)
2. City of Santa Rosa – May 6-10: elementary to high school (public)
3. Cavinti – April 29 to May 10: pre-school to high school, suspension of afternoon classes (public)
4. Siniloan – Blended learning system for all public schools until the end of the school (academic) year
5. Pagsanjan – May 6–10: half-day classes only (Until 11 a.m.) -pre-school to high school (public and private)

The OCD-RDRRMC reminded students and teachers to observe extra precautions, drink water, and stay hydrated.
Meanwhile, in Tayabas City in Quezon province, on-site classes at all levels in public and private schools are still suspended on Monday and Tuesday (May 6 and 7) as ordered by Mayor Maria Lourdes Reynoso-Pontioso.
“The suspension of face-to-face classes is a preventive measure to avoid any unforeseen incident that could endanger the safety of both students and teachers,” the City Public Information Office announced on its Facebook page on Sunday night.
The local chief executive started the suspension of in-person classes in all schools in the locality on April 25 due to abnormal heat.

The mayor reported that there were students who experienced nose bleeding while they were inside the classrooms.
To ensure public safety, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration advised the public to limit outdoor time amid the extreme heat.
The agency also urged the public to drink plenty of water, avoid tea, coffee, soda, and liquor, use umbrellas, wear hats and sleeved clothing outdoors, and schedule heavy-duty activities during the cooler periods of the day. INQ
