Absenteeism imperils FOI bill in House

Proponents of the freedom of information (FOI) bill are worried that the expected absenteeism of lawmakers next year would derail debates on the measure and its passage in the House of Representatives before it goes on break for the May elections.

Today, Aug. 10, is the 113th birth anniversary of nationalist statesman Lorenzo Tañada, known as the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Politics.”  A former Philippine senator, he was elected in 1948 and re-elected three times.  Known as a civil rights advocate, Tañada died on May 29, 1992, at the age of 94.
