LUCENA CITY – On-site classes at all levels in public and private schools in Tayabas City in Quezon have resumed on Wednesday, May 8, but with some limitations.

“It is highly recommended that the conduct of highly essential activities shall be held indoors and in the early part of the day or later in the afternoon when the temperature is bearable and that all other safety precautions under ‘Extreme Caution Level Heat Index’ are followed,” Mayor Maria Lourdes Reynoso-Pontioso said in her order that the City Public Information Office posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday, May 7.

The mayor said the resumption of limited face-to-face classes aims to help the students catch up with the essential school activities and avoid the disruption of the school calendar.

The City Schools Division Office would issue a separate order instructing the school administrations to implement precautionary measures to ensure the safety of both students and teachers while attending classes and related activities, the mayor said.

Reynoso-Pontioso noted that the forecasted heat index in the city for Wednesday is at an “extreme caution level of 39 degrees Celsius.”

The local chief executive started suspending in-person classes in all schools in the locality on April 25 due to abnormal heat.

To ensure public safety, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration advised the public to limit outdoor time amid the extreme heat caused by the prevailing El Niño.
