A LAWYER is facing a new libel suit for allegedly spreading lies about celebrity doctor Vicky Belo and the botox procedure performed on international singer Charice Pempengco.
The Belo Medical Group was reacting to a recent statement of lawyer Argee Guevarra who has already been charged with libel because of Facebook postings allegedly defaming the doctor.
Guevarra has renewed his call to boycott the Belo clinics and beauty products promoted by the establishments.
He also alleged that Belo was never a certified surgeon, adding that he was planning to ask Congress to investigate ?nonqualified and noncertified medical practitioners practicing and promoting themselves as cosmetic surgeons.?
?All Filipinos should be outraged at Belo?s medical irresponsibility after she recommended thermage to Charice Pempengco,? Guevarra said in an e-mailed statement.
The lawyer added that the doctor indicated that Pempengco?s naturally round face was not acceptable to the world.
?This is medical quackery at its ugliest, inducing someone to undergo a cosmetic procedure when there is no need to do so,? he said.
?Being a lawyer, Atty. Guevarra should know that if he has legitimate grievances, then he must air them in the appropriate forum rather than in the media,? the Belo Medical Group said in a statement. ?In this regard, we will be filing appropriate actions ? against him for disseminating malicious lies against us.?
It added that Belo is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, the International Society of Cosmetic Laser Surgeons and the American Society of Lipoplastic Surgery.
Guevarra?s first call for a boycott of the Belo clinics was in protest of the failed buttocks augmentation procedure performed on a patient allegedly by one of Belo?s doctors.
Because of his Facebook status messages, Guevarra has been charged with four counts of libel in the Provincial Prosecutor?s Office of Taytay, Rizal.
Pempengco?s botox treatment to prepare her entry to the top-rated US television show, ?Glee,? generated negative reactions all over the world, becoming the sixth most discussed topic on Twitter worldwide and on Facebook news feeds.
Many said the 18-year-old singer was too young to undergo cosmetic enhancement.
Belo, however, said that the treatment was not plastic surgery but a ?non-invasive injection.?
