UE entrance tests in Isabela, Zambales

THE UNIVERSITY of the East (UE) will administer its college entrance tests from August to October to graduating high school students in Isabela and Zambales. The tests will be conducted from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. In Zambales: Aug. 30, Olongapo City National High School, East Bajac-Bajac, Olongapo City; Sept. 6, Zambales National High School, Iba; and Sept. 13, St. Joseph College, East Bajac-Bajac, Olongapo City. In Isabela: Oct. 11, Isabela National High School, Ilagan; Oct. 18, Cauayan National High School, Cauayan City; and Oct. 25, Santiago National High School, Santiago City. Application forms are available at the guidance offices of the testing venues. Tests are also conducted at 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3.30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday at the UE Manila and UE Caloocan Admission Offices. National Artist lectures at Adamson

WRITER F. SIONIL JOSE, National Artist for Literature and Ramon Magsaysay Award winner, gave a lecture recently at Adamson University after the staging of his short musical play, ?Pragres,? at the university theater. Jose answered questions afterwards. The play was one of two productions of the Cultural Affairs Office (CAO) featuring Tanghalang Pilipino actors. The other play was Chris Martinez?s ?Welcome to Intelstar.? Nenita Dimapilis, CAO director, said the office had scheduled several cultural activities for school year 2008-2009.

UPH grad is 9th in board exam

JON TIMOTHY M. RIVERO, Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy graduate of the University of Perpetual Help (UPH) in Las Piñas City, was ninth in the recent Physical Therapy Board Licensure Examination. Rivero, who got a rating of 83.5 percent, was one of 439 examinees who passed the board exam. UPH registered a 71-percent passing rate, higher than the national rate of 48 percent. Rivero was first among physical therapy graduates in March. Dr./Col. Antonio L Tamayo, UPH president, CEO, and chair, said Rivero proved that UPH graduates received quality education. The UPH Physical Therapy program is recognized by different foreign accrediting bodies.

PWU signs MOU

The Philippine Women?s University and San Carlos Seminary signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop programs and exchanges exploring inter-institutional educational arrangements leading to courses in religious and pastoral studies. The signing ceremonies at the San Carlos Seminary in Guadalupe, Makati, were attended by: (seated) Archbishop of Manila Gaudencio Cardinal B. Rosales and PWU board chair Dr. Helena Z Benitez. At the back are Msgr. Hernando Coronel, rector of San Carlos Seminary, and Dr. Amelou B. Reyes, PWU president.

An afternoon with MDM prexy

VIRGINIA F.S. DOMINGO, Morning Dew Montessori president, said improving employees? perception of themselves could help improve morale and productivity. Domingo said, ?Productivity is closely tied to morale and morale is a reflection of how people see themselves.? The MDM president regularly hosts ?Afternoon with the President,? a monthly birthday party for employees, through which she hopes to boost the morale of MDM staff. She believes employees will be more productive if the leader has a good relationship with them.

IAME?s Harvard group

A GROUP from the International Academy of Management and Economics (IAME) attended recently a course on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution conducted by the consortium of Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Tufts University. The group was composed of Ireneo Martinez Jr., PhD, in Management, chief of staff of Rep. Ferdinand R. Marcos; Bruce Lu, PhD, in Management, managing director of United Cycle Inc.; June Francis Roño, PhD, in Management, president of TRI Group Strategies-Solutions, Management; and Emmanuel Noli T. Santos, PhD, IAME chair-CEO.

Fatima registers 100-percent passing rate in pharmacy test

THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) has again registered a 100-percent passing rate in the recent pharmacy licensure examination. The feat earned it its fourth ?Top Performing School? award from the Board of Pharmacy of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). This is the third consecutive time the college registered a 100-percent passing rate in the pharmaceutical board exam. A total of 22 graduates took the exam. Fatima ranks second among schools with 10 to 25 examinees, next to the University of the Philippines-Manila with 25 examinees.

SBC?s Red Sea Lions eyeing 8th swim title

WITH THEIR RECENT win in the Hong Kong International Invitational Meet and the Tawan Cruises Challenge in Phuket, Thailand, the San Beda College?s Red Sea Lions swimmers have now won 18 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze medals. The team is now ready to defend its title in the National Collegiate Athletic Association where it has been champion for seven consecutive years. Coach Dondon Roxas says self-discipline and focus are keys to achieving their goals. Teamwork is the golden rule for the Sea Lions. James T. Sy, Bedan alumni and team manager, encourages the next generation of SBC students to devote the right amount of time to study, play and swimming. Rector Fr. Matt de Jesus, OSB, reminds the winning team that the unseen force behind it all is faith in God.

Claret alumnus brings ?Bright Child? to Alaminos

CLARET SCHOOL-QUEZON CITY alumnus Mayor Hernani A. Braganza (GS 1977/HS 1981) of Alaminos, Pangasinan, launched recently the Bright Child Program. The program is designed to help children be the best they can be, develop their multi-intelligence and upgrade their mastery level. It was prompted by low results in the 2004 National Achievement Test (NAT) of Grade 6 pupils in Alaminos that put it last among 13 divisions in the Ilocos Region and 185th among 188 divisions in the country. Braganza said in a recent education summit, with the program, the city?s elementary and secondary students ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, in the Ilocos Region, in the 2007 NAT.

Outstanding UST alumni for architecture

ABELARDO TOLENTINO JR., president and chief executive officer of architecture and design firm Aidea Philippines, Inc., received The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni (TOTAL) Award in Architecture for 2008 from the University of Santo Tomas. A 1987 graduate, Tolentino was recognized for upholding the Thomasian ideals of competence, compassion, and commitment in professional and personal endeavors. The Total awards, a project of the UST Alumni Association Inc. (USTAAI), is the highest recognition bestowed by the university and USTAAI on alumni who have excelled in their respective fields. Cebu Jesuit school inaugurates new campus

SACRED HEART SCHOOL, a Jesuit secondary school in Cebu, will inaugurate on Aug. 24 its new 8.5-hectare campus.

Ricardo Cardinal Vidal will celebrate a Pontifical Mass.

The new campus of the school that was previously located on General Maxilom Avenue, now has the pre-school wing, grade school, high school and administration buildings; two-story canteen for students and high school gymnasium.

The new Sacred Heart statue at the Rotunda of the campus was crafted by German sculptor Karl Herbich, whose works include the portrait of Luciano Pavarotti and the restoration of the Angel of Peace in Munich, Germany.

School director Fr. Ernesto Javier, SJ, expressed his joy that the people of Cebu would finally have the ?school of our dreams.? Established in 1955 as a Chinese-Filipino school, Sacred Heart was integrated into the Ateneo system in 1988. It now has a student population of 2,500.

Manila hosts 1st Asia Pac Confab on Nursing Research

THE FIRST Asia Pacific Conference on Nursing Research will be held Sept. 4 -5 at the Manila Hotel.

A pre-conference that includes master classes and workshops will be held Sept. 3 at the University of the Philippines Manila.

Organized by UP?s College of Nursing, with the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the conference brings together nurses and health workers from the region to develop and organize the research capability of nursing practitioners.

The event is part of the state university?s Centennial celebration and the 60th foundation year of the College of Nursing of the university.

The main conference will feature plenary sessions, abstract presentations and commercial exhibits.

Several foreign nursing experts are expected and about 50 abstracts will be presented.

Over 600 nurses and health workers, nurse researchers and academics are participating.
