BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A radio broadcaster survived an attempt on his life Wednesday evening when he was shot by a man using a homemade shotgun in front of the dyWB Bombo Radyo station in Mandalagan, this city.
The police identified the victim as Alfonso Espino, an anchorman and reporter covering the defense beat who sustained minor bruises on the neck after he was allegedly shot by Diosdado Virtucio, a jeepney driver.
In an interview Thursday, Espino said he was relaxing with three other co-employees at a videoke bar in front of the dyWB station when Virtucio appeared and shot him once.
Senior Supt. Celestino Guara, officer in charge of the Bacolod City police, said the bullet only grazed Espino's neck, resulting in bruises.
Since the bullet was old and moist, it did not explode, Guara explained.
The police said they arrested Virtucio on Thursday in Barangay (village) Concepcion, Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
Virtucio admitted that he shot Espino due to the latter's refusal to provide him tapes of the commentaries that reportedly besmirched his reputation, said Bacolod police Station 3 chief Senior Inspector Leonardo Borromeo.
Espino said he had no knowledge of such commentaries, adding that he suggested to Virtucio to get the assistance of the National Telecommunications Commission.
The policemen who arrested Virtucio in Talisay City, however, failed to recover the homemade shotgun the suspect reportedly used in shooting Espino.
Espino said he was determined to press charges against Virtucio for the attempt on his life.
In the past, four anchormen of Bombo Radyo in Region 6, including Eddie Suede, Rico Arcones, Frank Palma and Heherson "Boy" Hinolan, separately died in assassinations, police records showed.
