ZAMBOANGA, Philippines—A grenade exploded outside the Jolo Cathedral in Sulu on Tuesday morning.

Major General Ben Dolorfino, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said no one was hurt in the 1045 a.m. blast.

Dolorfino said an unidentified person launched an M72 grenade from outside the cathedral compound with the explosive landing at the back of the church, near the Notre Dame cemetery.

He said the way the attack was conducted terrorism could be the motive of those behind it.

But Jolo Bishop Ben Lampon, in a phone interview, said the grenade hit the concrete roof of a window at the side of the cathedral.

“No one was hurt, but the glass window was shattered,” Lampon said.
