ROXAS CITY, Philippines -- A retired schoolteacher was killed while five other people were rescued when the boat they were in capsized as it was navigating the Panay River in Barangay (Village) Bantique, Panay, Capiz at noon Monday.

The police said the body of Sylvia Roxas, 70, of Butacal village, Panay, was recovered, with the help of residents, by the Philippine Coast Guard shortly before 1 p.m., a hundred meters from where the boat capsized.

The survivors were identified as Roxas’ brother, Godofredo, 60, who owned and steered the boat; Jocelyn, Nilda and Ronel, all surnamed Bacquilar; and Margarita Dizon, all of Butacal.

Fishpens along the river prevented the five from being swept away by the strong current, according to Godofredo.

He said the boat left their village at 4:45 a.m. to bring the passengers and six sacks of rice to Pontevedra town.

He said they were between the villages of Butacal and Bantique when his boat developed mechanical trouble after its spark plug exploded. The boat was immediately carried off by the strong current and capsized, he said.

Godofredo said they failed to locate his sister after several attempts to rescue her.

He said his sister was going to the Roxas City airport to meet her daughter, who was arriving from abroad.
