CEBU CITY, Philippines -- A 74-year-old man died while his six-year-old grandchild went missing when a flashflood triggered by a heavy downpour swept their house in Clarin, Bohol on Wednesday morning.
Two other towns in Bohol -- Tubigon and Cortes -- were also affected by flooding, according to the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) 7 based in Cebu city.
The fatality was identified as Ebaristo “Tingting” Ramos of the village of Poblacion Centro, Clarin.
Ramos’ six-year-old grandchild Harold was still missing as of Wednesday afternoon.
OCD 7 officer-in-charge Neil Angelo Sanchez said Ramos and Harold were asleep when their house, located along the riverbank, was swept away by the strong current of water around 5 a.m.
Sanchez said Ebaristo’s body was found a few meters from their house, while rescuers were still searching for Harold.
The flashflood also destroyed the house of Serapio Miano in the same villag.
Other villages in Clarin -- Bonbon, Poblacion Norte, Tangaran and Bacani -- were also hit by flooding, killing some livestock and destroying crops in the area.
In Tubigon town, the villages of Macaas, Poblacion Centro, Tinangnan and Batarya were also hit by flooding. No report of casualty so far.
The Cultural Center of Tubigon was turned into an evacuation centers for displaced residents from affected villages of Maca-as, Poblacion Centro, Tinangnan, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said.
There were no reports yet on the number of families evacuated due to the floods.
Minor landslides were also reported in the villages of Talenceras, Tinangnan, Busungon and Ubuhan in Tubigon town but no casualties were reported, the NDCC said.
In Cortes town, the highway going to Balilihan town was impassable as of press time after a river running through sitios Kamayan and Rosario in the village of Loreto overflowed.
Sanchez said there was no report of any other casualties.
The state weather bureau had reported a low pressure area in Eastern Visayas that caused heavy downpours in the Visayas area.
OCD has yet to receive reports of any damages in other parts of region 7 like Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor. With a report from Kate Evangelista, INQUIRER.net
