MANILA, Philippines -- Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez said on Tuesday she was ?unfazed? by the progress of the impeachment complaint against her.
In a statement coursed through her media officer, Gutierrez said she would answer the complaint point by point when required to do so.
She also expects to be vindicated.
?She shall allow the legal process in congress to move on until she is fully vindicated of the unfounded charges by her detractors,? said spokesman Jose de Jesus.
Gutierrez has been accused of sitting on graft and corruption complaints against former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo. Gutierrez was a college classmate of Mr. Arroyo.
The House of Representatives? justice committee has found the impeachment complaint against Gutierrez sufficient in form and substance. The next step is for the justice committee to hold hearings in preparation for reporting the complaint against Gutierrez to the plenary.
It will be at this point that the sponsors of the impeachment must collect the signatures of 30 percent of all members of the House to be able to impeach Gutierrez and transmit the complaint against her to the Senate, which is tasked under the Constitution to hold impeachment trials.
