MANILA, Philippines—Amid political pressure, as well as those coming from farmers’ groups, Sen. Benigno "Noynoy’’ Aquino III said Monday he will meet with his sisters and cousins in the Cojuangco side to discuss the fate of the family-owned Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac.
"I’m meeting with my relatives ... (Tuesday) and I want to ask them actually what the present situation is,’’ Aquino told reporters.
The senator, who is the standard bearer of the Liberal Party in next year’s presidential elections, said he wanted to ask his relatives on the "possible’’ and "workable’’ options they have in resolving the matter of Hacienda Luisita and how soon they can do this.
"There is a pending case before the Supreme Court and this has not yet been resolved, so that should also be looked into. Because how can you come to a final solution to the problem when that is a major pending issue?’’ Aquino said.
He said he wanted the issue on Hacienda Luisita resolved should the family get out of it following a proposal to transfer the ownership of the land.
Aquino said, personally, he wanted to resolve how the farmer-beneficiaries would be able to have stable work there, something which they’ve wanted since 2004.
