MANILA, Philippines?US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced on Thursday afternoon an additional $5.2 million in disaster relief for the Philippines during her visit at the Malanday National High School in Marikina City, one of the areas worst hit by Typhoon "Ondoy? (international codename: Ketsana).
The funds are on top of $14 million the US has provided in response to the recent storms that devastated Luzon.
Clinton also formally opened a book fair in which some 50,000 books donated by an American foundation through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were to be distributed to the students. School supplies, including a copier, 200 desks, 20 electric fans, were also donated.
Security was very tight at the Malanday National High School, a public school with almost 2,000 students, for Clinton?s visit.
A member of the Presidential Security Group with a bomb-sniffing dog checked bags and equipment of everyone entering, including students and media, while two secret service men in black watched in the background. Policemen surrounded the perimeter of the school compound.
At the gates, some 50 high school and elementary students waving American and RP flags and a band welcomed the former US first lady.
While people cheered on the sidewalks, a man with a protest placard tried to rush in but was quickly subdued by the police.
