NAGA CITY, Philippines? With the formal launch of the tandem of Senators Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Manuel ?Mar? Roxas II as standard-bearers of the Liberal Party, an executive officer of the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC) has resigned to support the two?s campaign for the 2010 elections.
Commissioner Jaime Jacob revealed Monday that he resigned from the PAGC so that he could freely support the campaign of the LP candidates for the top positions.
But Jacob said his resignation was set to take effect on Thursday and from there, he could start getting involved in activities to raise the public?s awareness of the Aquino-Roxas? "moral recovery" campaign.
He said he was confident that with the right moves, the Filipino people could still be mobilized in the spirit of the 1986 Edsa Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship, to bring change in the national leadership now.
A former congressman himself, Jacob won in 1998 in Camarines Sur's second district congressional race under the Aksyon Demokratiko of the late Senator Raul Roco.
He said he was able to win by tapping volunteers from non-government organizations.
Jacob had occupied other appointive positions in the Arroyo administration as chairman of the Philippine National Railways and head of the Bicol River Basin Project before he was appointed commissioner of the PAGC in 2006.
Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo, an LP stalwart in Bicol, welcomed the resignation of Jacob, to join the Aquino-Roxas campaign, saying it clearly affirmed the ascendancy of the Liberal Party team-up as an anti-corruption tandem and symbol of good governance.
"Coming from someone in the know, Commissioner Jacob's resignation tells us that the Noynoy-Mar team can deliver," he added.
