Arroyo son mulls going to Aquino wake

MANILA, Philippines -- Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel ?Mikey? Arroyo, the President?s eldest son, is mulling over going to the wake of former President Corazon Aquino at the Manila Cathedral.

The young Arroyo said his presence there might cause ?more anxiety? to the family.

?Pinag-iisipan ko [I?m thinking about it],? he said when asked if he would show up at the wake.

?But if my presence there will cause more anxiety to the family, I?d rather not attend. I understand the situation. I know the grief, I don?t wish to add more grief to the family,? he said on Tuesday.

Not one member of the First Family has visited the wake. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is scheduled to arrive in the country from the United States before dawn on Wednesday.

The congressman said he had nothing to do with his family?s political differences with the Aquinos and believed that the two clans have remained friends.

?I have high respects to the former President. She is my godmother in the wedding. She is also the godmother of Dato in kumpil [confirmation],? he said, referring to his younger brother, Camarines Sur Representative Diosdado Arroyo.

Mrs. Aquino had a falling out with the President in 2005 when she called for her resignation over allegations of electoral fraud.
