LUBAO, Pampanga -- Four Arroyos in the House of Representatives should not be an issue, Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel ?Mikey? Arroyo said.
?The thing is we won,? President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo?s eldest son told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) on Saturday.
The entry of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo?s sister, Ma. Lourdes Arroyo, as representative of the Kasangga party-list, brings to four the number of Arroyo family members in the House of Representatives.
The two other Arroyos in Congress are the President?s youngest son, Camarines Sur Representative Diosdado Arroyo, and Mr. Arroyo?s brother, Negros Occidental Representative Ignacio Arroyo.
The Pampanga lawmaker said the Supreme Court decision, which raised to 55 the number of partylist representatives, brought an advantage not to the Arroyo family but to the ranks of militant lawmakers.
?But I don?t know why they are harping on that angle that there are more Arroyos. If you look at the make of the partylist militants, they?re getting more and more also,? he said.
He said the Arroyo family should not be faulted for being in Congress.
?We come from different places. We?re elected from different constituencies whereas the party-list members are elected at large. It is the party which elects them,? he said.
?We don?t know where they are coming from. The angle that they?re trying to put is that there are more Arroyos but if you look at the Supreme Court decision, there are more opposition militant legislators that have come in,? he said.
As for her aunt, the younger sister of his father, the lawmaker said her success would depend on what legislative agenda she would pursue, not on the basis of her being an Arroyo.
?The militant partylist members have already adjudged this administration as a sin to society. So who?s fair? Who?s not?? he said.
In Benguet, Gabriela Representative Luzviminda Ilagan said militant party-list groups in Congress would continue to investigate the human right abuses allegedly committed by Bantay partylist Representative Jovito Palparan Jr., based on the series of resolutions they filed.
Ilagan was in Bakun, Benguet, as guest during the 25th Cordillera Day on Friday.
?Just because [Palparan] is now in Congress it does not mean that we will stop to investigate the cases of abuse against him,? Ilagan said.
Palparan, a retired Army major general, has been blamed for the murders and disappearances of political activists in his areas of assignment in Luzon and the Visayas.
?We will be more vigilant now that he is in Congress. Yes, it will be difficult and awkward for us to work with him because he is the subject of our resolutions [on] human rights violations,? Ilagan said.
