MANILA, Philippine -- Two Catholic Church leaders are open to “extra-legal” means to oust President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and are hoping that a mass protest at the end of the month would lead to a “bigger action.”
Bishops Antonio Tobias and Deogracias Iniguez, Arroyo’s staunch critics, asked the people to show their disgust over recent events and hoped that the November 30 protest at the Balintawak Monument could lead to a people power.
"Ipakita natin na ayaw na natin ang nangyayari...iyan ba ay destabilisasyon na [Let us show our disgust over what has been happening…is that destabilization]?" said Tobias in a press conference Thursday.
Iniguez said they were open to any means to oust Arroyo.
"Pag nawala ang legal means, mapepwersa tayo pumunta sa extra-constitutional, extra-legal means [If we can no longer go through the legal means, we will be forced to use extra-constitutional or extra-legal means]," said Iniguez.
The bishops made their call a day after the justice committee of the House of Representatives dismissed the impeachment complaint against Arroyo.
Tobias also read a statement by detained military officer, Brigadier General Danilo Lim, which criticized the defeat of the impeachment case against Arroyo at the House of Representatives.
"This country needs a leader of heroic and nationalistic stature...the current president is the anti-thesis of that leader," Tobias read from Lim's statement.
The bishops were joined by the Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya and Akbayan.
