Atienza to meet Boracay stakeholders

MANILA, Philippines—Environment Secretary Lito Atienza on Friday said that his department would immediately move to resolve issues concerning the Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld government control over the island resort of Boracay.

Atienza said he welcomed the tribunal’s decision, adding that the ruling only reinforced the government’s primary role in protecting Boracay’s resources and maintaining order on the island.

The head of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has instructed him to meet with stakeholders affected by the Supreme Court’s decision.

Atienza said the high court’s ruling entailed the government’s control on Boracay to maintain the island’s status as “the crown jewel of the Philippines.”

“Boracay is already considered in danger, because of its polluted white beaches and denuded forest area,” Atienza said, noting that the island’s capacity has reached its limits.

Atienza said that he is planning to meet with Boracay’s residents and businessmen to clarify the implications of the Supreme Court ruling.

“The government will respect and consider the rights of each stakeholder, including those who have contributed to the island’s development and progress,” Atienza said.

He, however, noted that there was an urgent need to stop the abuse of vital natural resources on the island.
