MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) A son of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the host of a television game show, the chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority and four 2004 election losers are in the possible senatorial lineup of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) for the 2010 elections.
House Speaker Prospero Nograles, Lakas-CMD president, presented the list to reporters on Monday after a closed-door meeting of the party’s directorate at the Dusit Thani Manila in Makati City.
Those on the Lakas list released by Nograles are:
• Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr.
• Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid
• Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap
• Health Secretary Francisco Duque III
• Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Bayani Fernando
• Quezon City Mayor Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte
• Representative Ed Zialcita, 1st District Parañaque
• Representative Edcel Lagman, 1st District Albay
• Representative Monico Puentevella, Bacolod City
• Former senator Ralph Recto
• Former representative Prospero Pichay
• Representative Art Defensor, Iloilo
• Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson
• Optical Media Board chairman Edu Manzano
• Representative Abraham Baham Mitra, 2nd District Palawan
• Former presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor
But later in the day, Nograles said that presidential son Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel Arroyo, Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman and Education Secretary Jesli Lapus are also on the list of potential senatorial bets.
Asked who would be the standard bearer in the presidential elections, Nograles said they had no list of potential bets yet.
“We cannot say until now,” he said.
The possible Lakas-CMD senatorial candidates will be join the regional sorties of the both their party and those of the Lakas and Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi, Party of the Free Filipino) as part of the two parties’ efforts to smoothen out local conflicts before finalizing their merger, Nograles said.
