MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is toughening up against rice hoarders in the country as she tapped the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) to work with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to curb this problem, the head of PASG said.

Antonio Villar said they were preparing for a major operation next week against a group of hoarders in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Rice hoarding is believed to be one of the culprits that is causing the increase in the price of rice.

Arroyo has ordered the NBI to clamp down on hoarders of government-subsidized rice.

Villar said the PASG was included in the operation because some of their personnel were from the NBI.
