MANILA, Philippines -- Pro- and anti-government rallies are expected to be held simultaneously in the metropolis to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolution of 1986.

To maintain peace and order, at least 1,200 policemen will be deployed in key rally venues, with some 10,000 policemen and civil disturbance management staff on standby, said Police Director Geary Barias of the National Capital Region Police Office.

Those calling for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will stage rallies starting 10 am at Mendiola, some hundred meters away from the seat of power, Malacañang Palace, said Barias.

Earlier, the leftist Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said they were able to secure a rally permit at the said area.

Former president Corazon Aquino, who was put into power during EDSA 1, will meanwhile lead the gathering at Baclaran church in Parañaque City around 2 pm. She will be joined by National Broadband Network deal witness Rodolfo Lozada Jr. and United Opposition president and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.

Supporters of Ms Arroyo, on the other hand, will hold a program at the EDSA Shrine in Mandaluyong City Monday morning and at Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila around 2 pm, said Barias.
