MANILA, Philippines? The Taguig City government is rolling out the red carpet for its beloved son, newly crowned boxing champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire Jr. who defeated Mexican Fernando Montiel on Sunday in Las Vegas.
Taguig Mayor Ma. Laarni Cayetano directed city officials to prepare the honors for Donaire, who needed only about five minutes to demolish Montiel and snatch the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization bantamweight titles from the Mexican.
?It is only right and fitting that we give a hero?s welcome to Donaire because aside from being Taguig?s adopted son, he gave not only the city but the entire country quite a huge distinction,? she said in a statement.
In December, the city bestowed the honorary title to Donaire after his domination of Wladimir Sidorenko for the vacant World Boxing Association interim bantamweight title. Cayetano and other city official then feted the fast rising Filipino boxer next to Pacquiao a hero?s parade.
Mayor Cayetano instructed her secretary Marco Evangelista to make the plans for the welcome, which includes a motorcade to the city?s 28 villages.
