MANILA, Philippines ? Maynilad Water Services Inc. has started rationing water in certain parts of its network to cope with the persistently low water level at Angat Dam despite recent rains.

Maynilad said in a statement e-mailed to the news media that some places ? comprising 10 percent of the affected areas ? will have water supply for only six hours or less a day.

Among those severely affected by the reduction are 22 barangays (villages) in Quezon City, 13 villages in Caloocan City, 4 in Malabon, 4 in Valenzuela City, 2 in Las Pinas City, and 1 in Navotas.

The statement did not say how Maynilad officials decided which places would get less or more water than others. Company officials said that a locality?s elevation, and the adequacy of its pipe network were among the factors to be considered.

Maynilad started implementing the rationing scheme on July 16. It will review the schedule of water interruptions on July 23 depending on the situation at the Angat Dam.

To ease the water supply problem, Maynilad said it has been conducting "regular system adjustments in our pipe distribution network."

The water services provider said it has also deployed 28 water tankers, installed five stationary water tanks, reactivated four deep wells and intensified the repair of leaks.

Maynilad said it would also make the supply schedule available to the public through the media, its company web site, Smart Infoboard, email blasts and Maynilad Hotline 1626.

The rotating water schedule shall apply to the following areas (the times provided indicate the periods when the localities will have no water supply):
